Online Games kill…

Probably not the exact game. But you get the point.

Probably not the exact game. But you get the point.

David Heiss, a demented gamer is the warcentral.com killer for Advance Wars online gaming forum.  He had been blocked by Matthew Pike and girlfriend Joanna Witton.  Heiss had flown to Nottingham U.K several times for surprise visits, and became acquainted with Matthew and Joanna, who were boyfriend and girlfriend. Heiss had become obsessed with Joanna, during his surprise visits,  so the couple decided to block him from their online game forum. It was at this time  David flew from Germany to the U.K. to kill Matthew Pyke.  David stabbed Pyke 86 times

David was obsessed with Joanna Witton, and was sorry that he had to “blackmail” her in order to talk with her. David never fully omitted what black mail he was speaking of. David also revealed that he had traveled to Nottingham prior to visit Joanna, but did not make contact.

Oh and the clincher. Matthew Pike tried to write the killers name on his computer with his own blood. They say games aren’t dangerous. I’d switch to chess.

Chess is awesome.

Chess is awesome.

Yahoo kills Geocities Literally…

Die Geocities Die.

Die Geocities Die.

So Yahoo said over the weekend said that Geocities is going Bye-Bye. This was popular free website builder in the 90′s brought to you by a web savy group who had cornered the market with free webpage, with all the ads you could handle. This kinda makes me sad, because I must have had 100 free geocities pages. I don’t have the e-mail address or passwords and haven’t for years but Geocites was my intoductory into the world of “how to build a web page”.

Yahoo bought geocities in ’99 for a cool 4.7 million and its basically gone down hill since the merger. This was because of sites like Friendster, and Myspace that don’t require you to know any html coding that Geocities taught a lot of teenagers who grew up with Geocities in the 90′s. This just means more of the gimmie it now younger crowd who doesn’t want to work for a decent looking web page wont ever have the opportunity to be forced to make a html based page. They wouldn’t anyways but, imagine if everyone was forced to learn the basics, how much better the internet would be.  Its truly the death of a generation of web developers who knew html.

So its a sad day in the internet. Good bye Geocities. You taught me more than I’ll ever be able to thank you for.

Touching the Military…

iTouch: The next killing machine. and i thought I was tough.

iTouch: The next killing machine. and i thought I was tough.

The hottest new battlefield weapon in Baghdad is also a hot item on the home front.

iPod Touch is proving to be a valuable tool to members of the U.S. military, according to a report in Newsweek.

The report notes that the iPod performs many functions in this time of “networked warfare,” enabling soldiers to be linked with other soldiers, as well as intelligence resources, such as aerial images from drones and translation software.

Soldiers can use applications to add translated phrases to maps and photos, as well as show villagers video messages from local leaders. A new program called Vcommunicator translates spoken and written Arabic, Kurdish, as well as two Afghan languages.

Another application developed for the iPhone allows soldiers to take a photo of a street sign, upload it, and immediately receive intelligence on the local area, such as water and sympathizers. Because new recruits are already familiar with how the iPod and iPhone work, it’s also easier to train soldiers on loading content, the report notes.

Oh yeah, this rugged device, which retails for less than $230, was developed in the private sector without taxpayer money. Considering the military’s history of being charged for $435 hammers, $640 toilet seats, and $7,600 coffeemakers by contractors, this is a great deal.
